data request instructions¶

to obtain data from BIEN3, please e-mail the *BIEN list* a data request containing the following:

1. a short description of your analysis
   (this will help us remove duplicate rows, etc. as needed for your specific analysis)
    
2. the columns you need
   • please indicate any non-essential columns, as some of these may not be available and would unnecessarily delay your extract
   • for the taxon name, please specify which of the following you need:
     • just the accepted name, or
     • the "scrubbed name": the accepted name but with the matched name filled in instead if there is no accepted name
   • see our *data dictionary* for a list of available columns
3. any special filter conditions (eg. New World-only) that should be applied to your data
    
4. whether your data extract needs to be publishable
   (some journals and reviewers require data to be publicly available)
    
5. by when you need the data
   (please keep in mind that data requests are handled by a developer, and that some requested columns might require custom processing to provide)
   please take into account all of the following:
   1. the submission deadline for your paper
   2. the time it will take to run your analysis
   3. the time it will take to prepare the paper once the analysis is run
